Is he shilling for his Daddy?

Bryan Peterson's current Adorama TV video (here) suggests using a Hoya FLW filter to give sunset photos a pleasant magenta tint.  Why would he say that when you can do the same thing in a few seconds with Photoshop?

A several-year old thread on DPReview (here) points out that an on-lens FLW would cut some light to the blue and green pixel sites, causing increased noise.  A poster also mentions that only Hoya sells FLWs, and FLWs (as of 2009) have become exceedingly rare in camera stores.  (Interesting, because Bryan mentions as an aside that no other camera store except Adorama has Hoya FLWs.)  The thread in general recommends photographing in raw and using Photoshop to tint the image.

One poster remarks that Bryan sells a lot of books by recommending cliché tricks that result in photos that look like a whole bunch of other photos already on the web.

Maybe Adorama wants to clear out their remaining inventory of FLWs and is using Bryan to do their marketing ...?

Today my carelessness ruined what should have been a good photo.

Friendly dog, nice lady, permission to take their picture, what could go wrong.  Lens is a Minolta MC ROKKOR-PF 50 mm F1.7 from 1970.

It's a manual-focus lens and I didn't take the five seconds needed to use focus-checking to guarantee that the picture was in-focus.

Result is an out-of-focus photo.

I over-sharpened this and pushed up the clarity to show just how badly focused it really is.

I hope I've learned my lesson today.

... "The camera is my tool.
Through it I give a reason to everything around me".

It worked well enough for him, but for me: "My camera is my passport, it gives me a reason to be with everything around me."

ISO 25,600

Straight out of the camera, no post-processing.  There is some chromatic noise.
I'll use 25,600 when there's a need for "composition trumps noise".
I'm saving both the jpg and raw files; the jpg is 11.2 MB, and the orf is 18.9 MB.  30 MB for every photo on the memory card!

And there were two Snickers bars enclosed!  :-)
Today is day three and it's obvious there is going to be a substantial learning curve to climb.
It's too early to post a photo just yet ...

Rescuing fading slides

The photos I posted today in Gallery 2 are rescued from fading slides.  The original film was probably no-name film from a drugstore; the slides don't have any product name at all.  The first time I looked at them after a few years of storage was a shock - only a faint green image remained,  Even that is now fading.  Here is how the originals look today:

I've done only a very basic cleaning on them so far; in a few days I'll really clean them. I'll also do a much more thorough image recovery than I did two days ago.  I doubt if I can ever get the original colors back to normal.

Luckily, most of my slides are Kodachrome ... they'll be good for many years to come.
